Meet the Breeders Behind Humble Hatchery
One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "Where did your birds come from?"
The answer is something I'm incredibly proud of.
Every breeding bird at Humble Hatchery has been carefully selected from flocks with Puerto Rican origins or has been bred here from those carefully established bloodlines. Rather than focusing on quantity, my goal has always been to build a diverse breeding program that preserves unique traits while honoring the history of the Puerto Rican Kikiriki.
Each bird contributes something different, whether it's exceptional size, color, feather type, body structure, or genetics. Together, they form the foundation of every chick hatched here at Humble Hatchery.
Hugh
The Foundation Rooster
Hugh is the cornerstone of my breeding program. He was imported as a live bird directly from Rafael Rivera in Puerto Rico and is estimated to be around two years old.
His light coloration, subtle silkie feathering, and beautiful bonehead topy crest immediately caught my attention. Beyond his appearance, Hugh consistently produces small, vigorous offspring with excellent type. He represents many of the traditional characteristics I value and serves as the primary sire for several breeding pens.
Lola
The Frizzled Naked Neck
Lola hatched in March 2025 from hatching eggs purchased from Wolfpack Farm. Her flock traces directly back to Puerto Rico.
She combines two fascinating traits—frizzle feathers and the naked neck gene—making her one of the most recognizable hens in the flock. She's paired with Hugh to continue producing unique offspring while preserving those desirable characteristics.
Pepper
The Elegant Black Hen
Pepper also came directly from Rafael Rivera's Puerto Rican flock and is approximately two years old.
Her glossy black plumage is accented with hints of copper-brown throughout her feathers. She sports a striking bonehead topy crest along with an exceptionally large, floppy single comb that makes her impossible to overlook.
Pearl
The Blue-Legged Beauty
Pearl joined Humble Hatchery as a live bird from Christina's Kikirikis, whose flock also originates from Puerto Rico.
Her short blue legs immediately set her apart. Combined with her bright white feathers decorated by distinctive black heart-shaped spots, Pearl is one of the most eye-catching hens in the breeding program.
Minnie
Tiny but Mighty
Sometimes the smallest birds leave the biggest impact.
Minnie came from hatching eggs produced by Autumn's Backyard Flock and displays classic traditional Puerto Rican coloring. While she doesn't possess any particularly flashy traits, her true value lies in her remarkable consistency.
She reliably produces exceptionally tiny offspring, making her one of the most valuable birds for maintaining the micro-sized Kikiriki that I strive for.
Lenore
The Laced Lady
Lenore also hatched from eggs produced by Autumn's Backyard Flock.
Her beautiful gray-and-white lacing combined with her topy crest makes her one of the most elegant birds in the flock. Beyond her appearance, she's a dependable layer and is always paired with a particularly small rooster to help maintain compact body size in future generations.
Ginger
The Pumpkin Micro
Ginger came from Gio Nayi Fernandez in Florida, whose family's flock traces back to Puerto Rico.
She checks nearly every box I love in a Kikiriki.
Rich pumpkin-orange coloration
True micro size
Extremely lightweight
Rumpless (Bola)
Tiny white legs
She's one of the smallest birds in the breeding program and brings exceptional genetics to every hatch.
Peaches
The Classic Pumpkin
Peaches also came from Gio Nayi Fernandez.
Like Ginger, she displays a beautiful pumpkin-orange color and true micro size. While she doesn't carry as many additional distinguishing traits, she consistently represents the compact body style I'm working to preserve.
Bonnie
The Micro Showstopper
Bonnie comes from Maestro's Kikirikis in Florida, with bloodlines originating in Puerto Rico.
She's truly one-of-a-kind.
Bonnie is:
White
Rumpless (Bola)
Bonehead
Topy crested
Micro sized
Carries a naturally diminished comb
She combines multiple desirable characteristics into one stunning little hen.
Clyde
The Rumpless Gentleman
Clyde also came from Maestro's Kikirikis.
He's a black-and-white Bolo (rumpless male) with a compact micro body and short yellow legs. His genetics make him especially valuable as I continue expanding the rumpless breeding project.
Claude
A Homebred Success
Claude represents exactly why I love selective breeding.
He was hatched here at Humble Hatchery from a Lenore × Hugh pairing and demonstrates the exciting possibilities that come from thoughtfully combining established Puerto Rican bloodlines.
Watching homebred birds mature is one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
Juno
Small and Sweet
Juno hatched from McIntire's Mini Mansion from a flock that also traces back to Puerto Rico.
Her compact body and short legs make her an excellent addition to the breeding program as I continue selecting for true micro size.
Dexter
The Next Generation
Dexter was hatched right here at Humble Hatchery from a Lola × Hugh pairing.
He inherited both the naked neck and frizzle traits, making him an exciting young rooster carrying forward the genetics of two of my favorite foundation birds. Watching homebred roosters mature into breeding quality is one of the most rewarding milestones for any breeder.
Current Breeding Pens
Each breeding group is planned with specific goals in mind, whether that's preserving unique traits, maintaining micro size, or combining complementary genetics.
Hugh's Pen
Lola
Pearl
Minnie
Goals: Traditional Puerto Rican bloodlines, micro size, frizzle, naked neck, blue legs, classic coloration, and strong overall type.
Dexter's Pen

Goals: Evaluating next-generation homebred genetics while continuing to refine micro size and overall quality.
Building for the Future
Every bird here has a purpose.
Some contribute size. Others contribute color, feather type, body structure, or unique genetics. Together they represent years of networking with breeders, carefully selecting bloodlines with Puerto Rican origins, and making thoughtful breeding decisions.
My goal has never been to produce the most birds—it has always been to produce birds that honor the incredible diversity and history of the Puerto Rican Kikiriki while continuing to learn more about this remarkable breed.
Thank you for following along as Humble Hatchery continues to grow. I can't wait to share the next generation with you.
