Egg Experiments
I partner with farms, hatcheries, and homesteads to test shipping methods as well as fertility of flocks. I document my experiments and current findings below.
Bantam Cochins - Shipping Test - Cluckin Crazy Farms
Goal: Determine which packing method for shipped eggs yield’s the best hatch rate: premade egg foam shippers or individually wrapped eggs?
To keep as many variables the same to study JUST observe the effect of type of packing material, the following are CONSTANT:
Each shipped express 2 day mail to doorstep
Eggs upon arrival were unpacked and placed large end up to settle at room temperature for 24 hours.
Eggs will be placed in an identical pattern in each tray of the Malticoopx30. Fluff and bubble wrap was used to pad the eggs into the incubator trays so they remain upright with large end up without jarring movement when the egg turner moves them automatically.
Egg turner will be turned on immediately to allow each tray to experience the same timing of movement to the developing embryo.
Incubator is kept 100.5F
Eggs will be placed into a lockdown incubator on Day 18 of development - two identical Bibibird incubators that can allow identical isolated hatching environments.
From the moment lockdown starts to the moment the last chick hatches - the lid must remain closed. I cannot place both sets of eggs into the same lockdown because of their staggered dates of hatch - albeit 2 days. I do not want to risk the chance of a shrink wrapping scenario.
Test Group A: Premade Foam Shipper Eggs
Placed into incubation on July 22, 2025 and are expected to hatch August 12, 2025.
Test Group B: Individually Wrapped Eggs
Placed into incubation July 24, 2025 and are expected to hatch August 14, 2025.
